LEARN ABOUT PROFESSIONAL SERVICESFloor-to-ceiling glass walls and wall-mounted glass wine rods create a clean and sophisticated look. The premium dark-stained walnut cabinetry lends it a touch of classic design, while also making room for diamond bins and dedicated wooden wine case storage.
Wondering, “Can I put a wine cellar in my basement?” Read on and this project will prove that the answer is a resounding yes.
This wine cellar in the basement serves as the ground floor of a two-level wine cellar, paired with a dining room wine rack above in an open living space. Both custom wine storage solutions are connected by a sleek glass partition and white staircase, allowing for uninterrupted sightlines between floors.
While the wine cellars are separated by different levels of the house, using glass enclosures for the basement wine cellar under the stairs gives the entire installation visual and architectural fluidity.
Keeping the design cohesive for both the upper-level dining wine rack and the lower-level modern basement wine cellar was key in making this custom build. But thanks to the bigger space in the basement, the design highlights—wine rack pegs with glass rods, dark walnut wood finish, and integrated LED lighting—naturally shine more in the lower installation.
Thanks to its floor-to-ceiling glass walls and glass doors, you’ll immediately see the centerpiece of this installation: the horizontal wine rack with glass rods and glass wine pegs for the wall.
Before you enter the glass walk-in wine cellar, it gives you the illusion that the bottles are suspended midair. The sections of the wall with label-forward display are built with horizontal glass wine rods three bottles deep. So the crystal-clear racking system gives the room a light and spacious effect without compromising storage capacity.
Rich, dark stained walnut surrounds the horizontal racking system, adding a warm contrast and sophisticated finish to the entire wall. The natural grain patterns of the walnut complement the clean lines of the glass components, creating a balanced aesthetic that feels both modern and timeless.
Traditional wine cellars often embrace a timeless and moody ambiance, which is a timeless design approach for home wine storage. And underground wine cellars—when done right—can also have a significant visual impact on a home.
However, this project demanded a different design philosophy that will fit right in with the aesthetics of this luxury California home. That’s why lighting was never an afterthought when designing this space. For this project, it’s one of the key features that makes this basement wine cellar a modern installation.
From the puck lights in the walnut valance to the vertical LED strips running through the racks of glass rods, the lighting system delivers a dramatic glow that highlights the wine labels in a gallery-like fashion.
Aesthetics and storage solutions are not the only things that make a wine cellar modern. A huge part of it is about how it can provide the optimal environment and climate—with consistency—for the wine bottles aging in your basement.
There are two ways we achieved that in this two-story wine cellar: a VRM 12000 twin evaporator cooling system and a custom vertical walnut louver grill for an elegant ventilation solution. Together, they ensure that there’s consistent temperature control throughout the storage area while operating quietly to avoid disturbing the living spaces above.
You can see that this glass-enclosed walk-in wine cellar only occupies one corner of our client’s basement. But that also shows how you don’t need a massive footprint to store an expansive collection. And this custom-built wine cellar’s nearly 1,500 bottle capacity is proof.
Here’s how Vintage Cellars maximize every available square inch while maintaining an organized, accessible system.
Below the wall-mounted horizontal wine rack are custom wood wine cabinets with alternating sections of diamond bins and individual cubbies for 750ml wine bottles. These compartments are made from clear alder wood, creating a subtle contrast with the dark walnut above it.
The play in contrasting design doesn’t end with different wood finishes. The wood wine cabinets are arranged with alternating sections of diamond bins and vertical shelving for individual storage of 750ml bottles.
Adjacent to the wine racks and directly under the basement stairs, there is more storage space. We’ve added shelves built specifically for wooden wine case storage displays. And the presence of both the sleek glass rods and wood cases perfectly makes the wine cellar a space where modern aesthetics blend with timeless visual appeal.
Beside the wine case shelving is a continuation of the dark walnut backdrop for showcasing precious champagne bottles in a vertical bottle display.
The dining room wine rack standing in this Newport Beach, CA home’s open living space is already an impressive display of premium wine collection. And when guests descend the stairs, they're greeted by something unexpected. They’ll find a modern basement wine cellar with the striking contrasts of rows of glass rods backdropped by stunning dark walnut wood finish.
If you're envisioning a basement wine cellar under the stairs, a stunning dining room wine rack, or even a two-story wine cellar, this project shows you can do all that and more.
